Overview
Main identification features
  • body: ~4 double red bars
  • female - 1st dorsal fin white and red
  • male - 1st dorsal fin black + yellow spots, tail base black
Dorsal rays III + XIII + 10 to 11, segmented rays branched except first; anal rays II, 18 to 20; pectoral rays 17; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line more or less horizontal; lateral line with 24-26 tubed scales followed two rows below by 8-12 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 34; eye cirrus pointed; scales rough except smooth on belly; preopercle and opercle mostly covered with small scales; scales absent on pectoral fin base; small spinules on edge of eyes, margin of opercle, nape, and dorsal surface of snout.

Whitish with four "double" red-brown bars on side; first dorsal fin white + red spots in female, black + 2 bright yellow/orange spots on its base in male; base of tail fin of mail with black bar.

Size: reaches 6.5 cm.

Habitat: occurs along rocky shores.

Depth: 2-40 m.

Known only from Costa Rica and Panama.
