Overview
Main identification features
  • body: 4 h bars, flank stripe
  • female - 1st dorsal fin red and black
  • male - red, 1st dorsal fin yellow and black, tail fin base black
Dorsal rays III + XIII + 12-13, segmented rays branched except first; anal rays II, 21-22; pectoral rays 16-17; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line more or less horizontal; lateral line with 27-29 tubed scales followed two rows below by 8-10 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 33-38; eye cirrus pointed; scales rough except smooth on belly; preopercle mostly covered with small scales; scales present on pectoral fin base; small spinules on edge of orbits, margin of preopercle, nape, and dorsal surface of snout.

Light brown to reddish pink with four H-shaped red-brown bars on side; a dark stripe along the flank, and black band at base of caudal fin; a large whitish blotch between each set of bars, that in front of tail-base bar silvery white; first dorsal fin of female red and black, of male black with two central yellow spots; breeding male; body overall reddish, first dorsal colors very bright, a black bar on base of tail fin.

Size: grows to 10 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-15 m.

Galapagos Islands.
