Overview
Main identification features
  • no dark streaks between lateral linepores
  • median fins: black borders
Elongate, eel-like; head low, compressed; snout with strong spine that does not reach tip of top jaw; eye diameter ~20% of head length; mouth large, broad, nearly horizontal, top jaw ends behind eye; teeth on jaws small, simple, in bands; first gill arch with 13 rakers; a small concealed spine at edge of operculum; dorsal and anal fins low, joined to tail; dorsal fin origin before middle of pectoral fin; dorsal ~120 rays; anal ~103 rays; pectoral long, reaching over 1/2 way to anal fin, on mid-side; pelvics small threads inserted under eye; scales round, small, in regular rows, on head extending to between or before eyes, on cheeks and opercle; ~250 lateral scales; tail compressed, tapering to a point.

Body uniform dusky, silvery on belly; gill chamber and mouth pale; lateral line uniformly pale; fins uniform except for diffuse dark margin on dorsal and anal, strongest at rear of anal, weakest on dorsal.

Size: 26 cm.

Habitat: demersal on soft bottoms.

Depth: 20-320 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California; Costa Rica to Peru.

Divided into 3 geographically isolated subspecies on basis of relative differences in sizes of head, body, fin and lateral line: 1 from the Gulf of California and Baja, 1 from around Colombia to Costa Rica, and 1 from northern Peru
