Dorsal spines and rays I + I + I + III / 8; anal rays 8; pectoral rays 16- 21 (usually 18-19); head broad and strongly depressed; mouth large, with large sharp teeth; pectoral fins limb-like; head with bony prickles; eyes in top of head; head and body with scattered skin flaps; head with fishing pole with complex "lure" (bearing pennant-like flap, long cirri, and, usually, dark, stalked, eye-like appendages); gill opening large, just behind pectoral.
Mottled brown; outer half of pectoral fins blackish with narrow white margin; caudal fin dusky dark brown to blackish with vertical row of white spots across middle of fin.
Size: reaches about 40 cm.
Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms.
Depth range 15-380 m, frequently captured by trawlers.
Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru, and Cocos, Malpelo and Galapagos.
The only other species of lophiid anglerfish occurring in the eastern Pacific, Lophiodes spilurus, is easily distinguished by the presence of minute dorsal spine cirri, a simple bulbous "lure", thin loose skin, and no white spots on the middle of the tail fin. It ranges from Costa Rica to Peru in 119-475m.
