Dorsal spines and rays I+I+I (2nd and 3rd spines with row of small papillae along front edge) +III, 8; anal rays 6; pectoral rays 15-18 (usually 16-17); head broad and moderately depressed; mouth large, with large sharp teeth; pectoral fins limb-like; gill opening in "armpit" of pectoral fins; head with bony prickles; eyes in top of head; top of head, body and fins covered with tiny cirr; head with fishing pole with a simple bulb-like "lure"; skin very thin and loose.
Uniform dark to brown; all fins with clear outer edges; 2nd and 3rd dorsal spines black; tail fin frequently with small clear spots; lining of gut cavity dark.
Size: to about 35.4 cm.
Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms.
Depth: 80-475 m.
Southern California to the lower Gulf of California to Peru.
