Dorsal rays X, 13 or 14; anal rays III, 8 (occasionally 7), end of fin pointed; pectoral rays 16 or 17; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch (including rudiments) 11 or 12; scale rows on upper back parallel to lateral line; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch on front roof of mouth crescentic, without a central posterior extension.

Body and fins mostly dark red, pink or whitish on belly; small specimens reported to have dusky bars on side.

Size: reported to reach 107 cm.

Habitat: occurs on offshore rocky reefs to at least 50 m, young often found inshore, sometimes in shallow estuaries.

Depth: 0-90 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Ecuador and Malpelo.

Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines : 3; Anal soft rays : 7 - 8. Preopercular notch and knob weak. Body and fins mostly red; sometimes with a blue streak under the eye. Young specimens are barred.
