Overview
Main identification features
  • elongate
  • dark lines along scale rows
  • c: forked, fin and base yellow
Body elongate; tooth patch on front roof of mouth triangular with a short medial posterior extension; dorsal rays X, 13; anal rays III, 11; pectoral fins short and somewhat rounded, with 17 rays; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14 or 15 (only 10 are distinct); scale rows on upper back rising obliquely above lateral line; teeth small and conical; enlarged canines of jaws relatively small and slender, 2 in upper jaw and 3 or 4 on each side of lower jaw; tail forked.

Generally reddish with narrow brown stripes on side, those above lateral line obliquely directed; peduncle and caudal fin yellowish; a white to yellow blotch below base of posteriormost dorsal rays.

Size: grows to at least 35 cm.

Habitat: common on rocky reefs, sometimes forming large diurnal aggregations; juveniles are effective mimics of the damselfish Chromis atrilobata and are often seen swimming with them.

Depth: 0-40 m.

The mouth of the Gulf of California to Ecuador and Cocos.
