Dorsal rays X, 14; anal rays III, 9, end of fin rounded; pectoral rays 16 or 17; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 12 (only 7 are well formed and distinct); scale rows on upper back parallel to lateral line; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch at front roof of mouth diamond- shaped.
Overall greyish or dark olive to reddish with silvery sheen on lower sides; freshly captured specimens often exhibit silvery-white spots on centre of scales forming longitudinal rows, these soon fade and fish becomes mainly dark brown to blackish.
Size: reaches about 61 cm.
Inhabits inshore areas, including shallow mangrove-lined embayments, also occurs on deeper offshore trawling grounds.
Depth: 0-200 m.
Mouth of the Gulf of Mexico to Peru, including Cocos and the Galapagos and Malpelo.
