Dorsal rays X, 13 or 14; anal rays III, 8, end of fin pointed; pectoral rays 16 or 17; scale rows on upper back rising obliquely above lateral line; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch at front roof of mouth roughly diamond- shaped; large adults develop a groove from front of eye to nostrils.

Mainly red to pink with silvery sheen, fins reddish.

Maximum total length about 95 cm, common to 50 cm.

Generally occurs on rocky and sandy bottoms offshore

Depth: 0-80 m.

Southern California to the SW and eastern Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos and Malpelo.
