Overview
Main identification features
  • yellow + 5 blue and black stripes
Dorsal rays X, 14 or 15; anal rays III, 8; pectoral rays 16 or 17; scale rows on upper back rising obliquely above lateral line; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch at front roof of mouth V-shaped, without a medial posterior extension; a deep notch in lower edge of cheek margin (preopercle).

Bright yellow with 5 black-edged bluish- white stripes.

Maximum size to 30 cm.

Habitat: sometimes forming large diurnal aggregations on rocky or coral reefs.

Depth: 0-60 m.

Southern Baja California and the mouth of the Gulf of California to Ecuador, including all the offshore islands.
