Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays 13-16; anal 24-27 rays, origin under rear 1/3 of dorsal fin; gill rakers on lower limb of first gill arch 18-23; snout short and blunt; upper jaw moderately long, reaching well beyond rear margin of eye, but not reaching rear margin of opercle, its rear tip rounded; lower jaw with small canine-like teeth, becoming larger posteriorly; pectorals long, reaching .

Blue on back, silvery white below; several small black dots on upper gill cover; a silver midlateral stripe present on smaller fish.

Size: to 23 cm.

Forms large schools over muddy inshore areas, also found in brackish estuaries and river mouths.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

El Salvador to Ecuador.
