Overview
Main identification features
  • red + blue bars: head - 2, front body - 3-5
  • dorsal fin 18, anal fin 14
  • pectoral clear, 18-19
Head with fleshy longitudinal crest; dorsal rays VI + I, 15-19 (usually 18), first 2-3 dorsal spines prolonged in male; anal rays I, 14-16 (usually 14); pectoral rays 17-20 (usually 18-19); pelvic disc present; head and nape scaleless; body covered with small rough scales.

Bright red grading to orange posteriorly; a pair of narrow blue bars on head and 3-5 similar bars on body; pectoral clear.

Size: attains 6.4 cm.

Inhabits rocky slopes, often seen with the purple sea urchin (Echinometra vanbrundti).

Depth: 1-75 m.

Southern California to central Baja, the Gulf of California to Panama, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
