Hypothallus discoid, small, red-brown or yellow. Stalk red-brown or sometimes yellow at the base, keratinoid, homogenous, not fibrous, distinctly hollow, tapering upwards and becoming darker, 50-70% of the total height. Sporotheca spherical, 0.05-0.3 mm diam., dark brown. Peridium partly persistent as a collar around the stalk apex. Columella reaching to c. the centre of the sporotheca. Capillitium dark brown, branched dichotomously, usually only 1-3 times, tapered outwards but remaining fairly stout at the periphery. Spore-mass dark brown. Spores lilac-brown or grey-brown, verrucose, 8-9 µm diam.
