Overview
Main identification features Elongate, compressed; dorsal rays IX-X+I, 27-30; anal rays I or II, 9-10, short base, weak spines; pored lateral-line scales 45-55; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 7-8, total rakers 9-11; mouth large and oblique, lower jaw projecting; eye moderate, 5.6-6.5 in head length; minute pores often present on tip of chin, no barbel; prominent curved, arrow-tipped canine teeth in both upper and lower jaws; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectorals long, reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; dorsal and anal spines weak; tail S shaped, longer in young; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath covering almost entire fin.

Color silvery, bluish or greenish greyish on upper back; axil of pectoral fin dark; fins whitish to slightly dusky.

Size: grows to 50 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters,including bays and estuaries.

Depth: 5-30 m.

Costa Rica to Ecuador.
