Dorsal rays XIX to XXIII, 12-14 (usually XXI, 12); anal rays II, 20-24 (usually 22-23); pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 14); lateral-line scales 53-65; scales present or absent on midline in front of dorsal fin; scales present on prepectoral and breast areas of specimens in excess of 5 cm (tail fin excluded); jaws with single row of large conical teeth; teeth on front of roof of mouth only; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and together on nape.

Olive greenish on upper half, whitish on breast and belly, 4-5 irregular-shaped dark brown bars on side; dorsal, anal and caudal fin of males uniformly dusky, but spotted in females; females with reticular pattern of dark lines on lower part of sides.

Size: to 13 cm.

Habitat: very common in the northern Gulf of California on shallow reefs among seaweed.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Western and northeastern Gulf of California.
