Overview
Main identification features

Dorsal rays XX to XXII, 10-12 (usually XXI, 11); anal rays II, 20-22 (usually 21); pectoral rays 14-16 (usually 15 or 16); lateral-line scales 51-56; scales present on midline in front of dorsal fin, on breast , and on prepectoral area; jaws with single row of large conical teeth; roof of mouth with teeth at front, not at sides; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape.

Ground color whitish with numerous irregular yellow-brown to grey-brown blotches on sides, belly white; a large pale-edged brown spot covering most of operculum; nuptial males dark greenish to grey, with several diffuse dark bars and 3 black spots on rear back.

Size: reaches 6.5 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 1-21 m.

The central Gulf of California to Colombia.

Springer (1958) recognized separate subspecies from the Gulf (M. margaritae mexicanus).and one from the remainder of its range (M. margaritae margaritae).
