Dorsal rays XVIII to XX, 9-12 (usually XIX, 11); anal rays II, 18-20 (usually 19); pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 14); lateral-line scales 53-61; no scales on midline in front of dorsal fin, present on breast of males only, and sometimes present on the prepectoral area; jaws with single row of large conical teeth; roof of mouth with teeth at front but not sides; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape.
A double row of dark greenish-brown blotches on side; head and lower half of body with numerous dark spots; a black pupil sized spot on side of nape.
Maximum length to about 7.5 cm.
Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.
Depth: 0-25 m.
Southern Baja and the central Gulf of California to Peru, including Galapagos Islands.
Springer (1958) recognized the populations from Baja California / the Gulf and the remainder of the range as a separate subspecies, M. t. multipunctatus and M. tetranemus tetranemus respectively.
