Overview
Main identification features
  • double dark blotch behind eye
  • throat and belly: dark spots
Dorsal rays XIX to XXI, 10-12 (usually XX, 11); anal rays II, 17-21 (usually 19 or 20); pectoral rays 13 or 14 (usually 14); lateral-line scales 52-60; scales present on midline in front of dorsal fin, absent on prepectoral region, sometimes present on breast; jaws with single row of large conical teeth; roof of mouth with teeth only at front; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape.

Olive on back with series of blackish saddles dorsally; an irregular dark brown to blackish midlateral stripe; throat and lower side whitish with brown to blackish blotches and spots; a prominent double dark spot on head just behind eye; spotting on median fins.

Size: attains 8 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 1-10 m.

The tip of Baja to the SW Gulf of California, and central Mexico (Mazatlan southwards) to Ecuador.

Springer (1958) recognized two subspecies: M. zonifer zonifer from Mexico, and M. zonifer sudensis from Nicaragua to Ecuador.
