Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays VIII-IX + 15-17; origin of 1st dorsal well before anal origin; anal rays I, 18-22; midlateral scales 43-47; body relatively deep, 3.7-4.0 in standard length; abdomen rounded in cross section, not compressed into a keel; forehead profile convex; mouth short, top jaw extendable; scales with ruffled edges on back, slightly ruffled edges to smooth on sides; pectoral fin short, reaching slightly beyond base of pelvic fins.

Dark blue on back and upper sides, silvery on lower half of sides and belly; no silver stripe.

Size: attains at least 10 cm.

Habitat: forms aggregations in the vicinity of reefs.

Depth: 0-10 m.

SE corner of the Gulf of California to Panama, Cocos and Galapagos.
