FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features elongate, slender 1st dorsal fin : x, 3rd spine passes origin 2nd dorsal fin c: s shape breast: scales very small, smooth Dorsal rays X + I, 22-24, 3rd spine reaches past origin of second dorsal; anal rays I, 7; pectoral rays 17-20 (usually 19 or fewer); pored lateral-line scales 49-60; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 0-6, total 7-10; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw which encloses it; a short, rigid barbel on chin; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw scarcely enlarged if at all; molar teeth in side throat; margin of preopercle weakly serrated; pectoral fins reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; anal fin with a single weak spine; tail margin S-shaped with pointed upper lobe; soft dorsal and anal fins with low, basal scaly sheath; scales of head and body rough, except smaller smooth scales on breast. Color silvery, greyish blue on upper back; dorsal and anal fins dusky. Size: attains a length of 47 cm. Inhabits coastal waters, frequently off sandy beaches. Depth: 1-70 m.
