Dorsal rays X + I, 21-23, spines very long; anal rays I, 8; pectoral rays 21-22; pored lateral-line scales 49-56; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 0-6, total 4-9; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw which encloses it; a short, rigid barbel on chin; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle weakly serrated; pectoral fins large, fanlike, reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; anal fin with a single weak spine; tail margin S-shaped with elongated upper lobe; soft dorsal and anal fins without basal scaly sheath.

Color greyish, lighter below; faint dark streaks following scale rows on back, often with numerous dark spots on sides; tip of spinous dorsal fin and outer half of pectorals blackish; remaining fins dusky.

Size: to 50 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters, including bays and the lower reaches of estuaries.

Depth: 1-20 m?.

Southern Baja and the eastern and NW Gulf of California to Peru.
