Dorsal rays IX-X+I,18-22, spines reach post origin of 2nd dorsal; anal rays I, 8-9; pectoral rays 20-23; pored lateral-line scales 52-55; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 0-5, total rakers 3-8; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw which encloses it; a short, rigid barbel on chin; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw distinctly enlarged; margin of preopercle weakly serrated; pectoral fins reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; anal fin with a single weak spine; tail margin S-shaped; soft dorsal and anal fins without basal scaly sheath.
Color dusky silver, greyish brown on upper back; head brownish; fins dusky, except pectorals jet black and pelvics whitish.
Size: grows to 75 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters, including bays and off sandy beaches.
Depth: 1-20 m?.
Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
