Slender, wormlike, body height 3-9% of standard length; gill opening large, not tubular, longer than base of pectoral; eye not tiny, on side of head, not skin covered; mouth small, lips thin, without folds; snout rounded; lower jaw strongly projecting, with small fleshy lump at chin; teeth in 1-3 rows; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail fin; tail (without fin) shorter than body and head (48% of standard length); dorsal 69 elements, origin over rear 1/3 of pectoral, spines evenly spaced; anal 43 elements; tail fin rounded, short (<3/4 head length); pelvics I, 3, shorter than pectorals; pectoral 12 rays; scales well separated.

(Preserved fish) uniform olive; tail slightly dusky, other fins clear.

Size: 11 cm.

Habitat: estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m.

SW and eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador.
