Overview
Main identification features
  • eye not tiny, on side
  • 2 rows oval blotches - all back and side
  • under eye - 2 bars
Slender, wormlike, body height 3-9% of standard length; body and head longer than tail (with fin); 31-33 trunk vertebrae and 26-29 tail vertebrae; teeth partly in 3 rows; eye not tiny, not skin covered, on side of head; snout rounded; gill opening not tubular, but narrow; dorsal spines evenly spaced; teeth in 1-3 rows; scales well separated; dorsal and anal fins confluent with rounded tail fin; dorsal 47-49 elements, origin ~2 head-lengths behind head, spines evenly spaced; anal 28-32 rays; pectoral small, shorter than pelvic, 10 rays; tail fin rounded, as long as head; pelvic 1 spine, 3 rays.

Translucent light olive; 2 dark bars under eye; a series of irregular oval dark blotches along top of back and another series along each side; fins translucent except that blotches on top of back extend slightly onto dorsal fin; sides of head and chin irregularly spotted with brown.

Size: 12.5 cm.

Habitat: intertidal rock pools and beachrock.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Central western Gulf of California to Panama.
