Overview
Main identification features
  • eye not tiny, at side;snout round
  • stripe behind eyeflank: row oblique spots

  • lower lips - side pouches
Slender, wormlike, body height 4-8% of standard length; body and head distinctly longer than tail (with fin); 35-37 trunk vertebrae, 30-32 tail vertebrae; gill opening large, not tubular; teeth in 1-3 rows; scales well separated; snout rounded; lower lips with pouches on sides that receive top lips and snout when mouth is closed; eye not tiny, not skin covered, on side of head; dorsal and anal fins confluent with tail fin; dorsal 28 evenly spaced spines, 42 rays (total 68-70 elements) origin ; over pressed-down pectoral; 34-37 anal elements; pectoral 13 rays; tail fin rounded.

Two dark bars under eye; a dark stripe from the rear of the eye joins a row of round to diagonal spots running along mid-flank for 2/3 the length of the dorsal and anal fins, 34-37 spots between head and origin of anal fin, spots becoming more crescentic rearwards; a row of asymmetrically placed oblong spots on each side of the dorsal fin; 3 streaks of pigment radiate horizontally and vertically from eye; irregular dark blotches on cheek and opercle; fin membranes clear.

Size: 12.5 cm.

Habitat: rocky shores.

Depth: 0-5 m.

SW Gulf of California to Panama.
