Dorsal rays VII + I, 14-16 (usually 15) dorsal spines 2-6 produced to form short filaments in both sexes; anal rays I, 15-16 (usually 15); pectoral rays 22-24; pelvic disc present; midlateral scales 46-55; scales smooth, except patch of rough scales beneath pectoral fin; head, nape, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fin scaleless; a patch of rough scales on flank behind base of pectoral fin; tail fin 32-33 percent of standard length; fleshy nape crest well developed in females; poorly developed in males.

Generally pale tannish brown with cream-colored belly; an ovoid dark spot with bluish posterior border below origin of first dorsal fin; first dorsal fin with broad inner band of blue, margin speckled with blue; second dorsal fin with oblique inner blue band, central bands of blue and orange and an orange margin; tail fin with inner orange spots, upper margin orange; anal and pelvic fins blue-white; pectoral clear.

Size: grows to 7 cm.

Inhabits flat sand bottoms.

Depth: 2-36 m.

Southern Baja and the eastern Gulf of California to Panama.
