Overview
Main identification features
  • 1st dorsal fin : long spines, darkbar below
  • silvery; flank - narrow short dark bars
  • 2nd dorsal fin : 3 rows orange spots
  • anal fin margin orange
  • lower tail fin margin orange
Dorsal rays VII + I, 15-17 (usually 16), dorsal spines 2-6 produced into filaments that may reach as far as tail fin base in males, those of females only slightly produced; anal rays I, 15-17 (usually 16); pectoral rays 20-23 (usually 21-22); pelvic disc present; midlateral scales 40-48; scales mainly rough; head, nape, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fin scaleless; tail fin with long central point, ~37% of standard length; fleshy nape crest absent in both sexes.

Light tan to nearly whitish; a narrow (wider in females) dark bar below front of spinous dorsal fin and several faint, narrow brown bars usually evident on side; second dorsal fin with 3 rows of orange spots; tail fin with orange spots and orange lower margin; anal fin with orange margin; pelvics silvery white

Size: attains 5.4 cm.

Inhabits sand, silt, or mud bottoms of estuaries, and tidal creeks.

Depth: 0-6 m.

SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.
