  • head and body compressed; nape with crest
  • d: vii, often long
  • c: long, oval or pointed

  • scales smooth, small, only behind pectoral
MICROGOBIUS

GOBIES

Head and body compressed; mouth large, nearly vertical; fleshy crest on nape; dorsal fin VII-VIII (usually VII) spines, some elongate, 15-20 rays; anal 14-20 rays; 2-3 pores on preopercle; tail long, oval or pointed (in males); tip of tongue divided; pelvics fused to form disc; scales smooth or slightly rough, body scaled from rear forward to tip of depressed pectoral fin, rest of body & head scaleless; scales small, 48-70 lateral rows.

A new world tropical to subtropical genus with 14 species; 8 endemics in our region.
