Dorsal rays XII-XIII, 16-17; anal rays III, 12-13; lateral-line scales 60-62; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 16; body slender, depth 2.6-2.7 in standard length; dorsal and anal fins covered with small scales.

Silvery grey with brown spot on each scale of back giving impression of dark oblique bands; dorsal and anal fins dusky yellowish; pelvic and pectoral fins yellowish; caudal fin brown.

Size: reaches 38 cm.

Habitat: forms schools in sandy areas.

Depth: usually in 5-30 m.

The tip of Baja and the mouth of the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
