Dorsal rays X+I,19-23, first dorsal fin tall, reaching beyond origin of second dorsal fin when depressed; anal rays II,7-8; pectoral rays 17-19; pored lateral-line scales 48-52; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 15-16, total 24-25; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw; lips thin; preorbital very broad; eye relatively small, its width much less than snout length (eye 2.0 or more in snout); chin with 4-5 pairs of small barbels; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle strongly serrated, 2 spines at the angle; tail margin a short, blunt point, upper lobe slightly concave; soft dorsal fin with low, basal scaly sheath.
Color silvery with a golden hue; scale rows above lateral line with faint brownish longitudinal streaks, also several oblique bars running upward and backward, crossing arched portion of lateral line; fins yellowish, dorsal and caudal fins somewhat dusky.
Size: attains 66 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters.
Depth: 1-104 m.
