Dorsal rays X + I, 23-26, first dorsal fin barely reaching or short of origin of second dorsal fin when depressed; anal rays II, 7-8; pectoral rays 16- 18; pored lateral-line scales 51-54; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 13-16, total 22-24; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw; lips thin; preorbital very broad; eye width much less than snout length (eye about 1.7-1.8 in snout); lower jaw with 4 pairs of minute barbels on each side; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle strongly serrated; margin of tail fin slightly double concave; soft dorsal fin with low, basal scaly sheath.

Color silvery grey with brassy hue; upper sides with dark oblique streaks extending upward and backwards along scale rows; fins yellowish, spinous dorsal fin with blackish outer margin.

Size: grows to about 40 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-33 m.

Southern Baja, the southern Gulf of California to Acapulco.
