Dorsal rays X + I, 27-29, first dorsal fin just short of origin of second dorsal fin when depressed; anal rays II, 7-8; pectoral rays 17-18; pored lateral-line scales 49-53; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 15-17, total 23-27; mouth small, inferior to upper jaw; lips thin; preorbital very broad; eye relatively large, its width 4.0-4.7 in head length; chin with 3 pairs of small barbels; teeth villiform, no canines; outer row teeth of upper jaw slightly enlarged; margin of preopercle strongly serrated, 2 spines at angle; margin of tail fin S-shaped; soft dorsal fin with low, basal scaly sheath.

Color silvery with slight golden hue; scale rows above lateral line with faint brownish oblique streaks; fins yellowish.

Size: reaches at least 40 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

Northern Gulf of California.
