Overview
Main identification features
  • 2nd dorsal fin and a: completely scaled
  • lateral scales 38-40
  • pectoral long: passes origin 1st dorsal fin
  • a: iii, 9
Dorsal rays IV + I, 8; anal rays III, 9 (juvenile 10); fatty (adipose) tissue covering most of eye; lips thin, lower lip with a prominent central knob; mouth small, rear end of upper jaw reaching to level between posterior nostril and front of eye; teeth barely visible with naked eye, not distinctly curved, with 1 point; pectoral fin long, reaches past origin of first dorsal fin; pectoral axillary scale 9-11 percent of standard length; lateral scales 38-40; second dorsal and anal fin completely scaled.

Dark greenish on back and upper sides, silvery on lower sides, and white below; a small black spot on upper base of pectoral fin.

Maximum size, 30 cm.

Habitat: occurs over sand and mud bottoms, sometimes entering estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Americas, mainly in tropical seas; in the eastern Pacific from southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
