Body compressed, lower profile more convex than upper; head large (~28% of standard length); space between eyes convex; mouth oblique; teeth large, with 1 point, those of outer row large, with rounded stalks, those on upper lip in several series, inner ones irregularly spaced, not in rows; with large adipose eyelid; 35-40 lateral line scales; body depth 23-28% of standard length; scale in pectoral axil 5-8% of standard length; dorsal IV + I,8; 1st dorsal origin slightly nearer tail than snout; 2nd dorsal strongly concave at rear, origin slightly behind that of anal; both dorsals relatively high; anal III, 9 (juvenile 10), with strongly concave rear border, height 15-18% of standard length; tail deeply forked, lobes much longer than head; pectoral rounded, reaching under origin of first dorsal fin in juveniles, just before in adults; scales large, 36-38 in lateral series; second dorsal and anal fins completely scaled (few or no scales in juvenile).
