Overview
Main identification features
  • both nostrils tubular
  • grey-brown, 3 rows pale blotches, many white dots
  • dorsal fin and a: margins white
  • gill opening in black patch
Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but clearly evident; dorsal fin origin well ahead of level of gill opening; both nostrils tubular, rear nostril above anterior margin of eye; teeth pointed and well developed, those of adults 2 rows; teeth on roof of mouth non- depressible.

Brown, body with three rows of large irregular yellow blotches and numerous small white spots; intense black spot covering gill opening; a black spot at rear corner of mouth, not preceded by white; margin of dorsal and anal fin white.

Size: attains 110 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 5-60 m.

Southern California to Baja, the eastern Gulf of California to southern Mexico, Colombia to northern Peru, and all the oceanic islands except Clipperton.
