Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Gerald Allen, 2006 · 0 Muraena clepsydra 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features both nostrils tubular pale brown, dense cream spotting rear lower jaw: black and white spot gill opening in large black ocellus Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but clearly evident; dorsal fin origin well ahead of level of gill opening; both nostrils tubular, rear nostril above front margin of eye; teeth pointed and well developed, those of adults in 2 rows; all teeth on roof of mouth depressible. Brown with dense covering of irregular cream- coloured spots; a large (equal to 2.5 times size of eye diameter or more) ocellated black spot covering gill opening; a black spot at rear corner of mouth preceded by white area on the lower jaw; young with 5-6 series of small hourglass-shaped spots. Size: largest about 97 cm. Habitat: rocky bottoms. Depth: 0-25 m. The tip of Baja and the SW Gulf of California, central Mexico to northern Peru, including the Revillagigedos, Galapagos and Malpelo.
