Overview
Main identification features
  • both nostrils tubular
  • variable brown + dark: edged pale spots or pale + brown mottling
  • gill opening; indistinct black spot
Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but clearly evident; dorsal fin origin well ahead of level of gill opening; both nostrils tubular, rear nostril above anterior margin of eye; teeth pointed and well developed, those of adults in 2 rows per jaw; all teeth on front roof of mouth depressible.

Coloration variable but typically brown with dark-edged yellow spots, becoming more numerous with growth; other varieties are yellowish brown to nearly white with darker brown mottling; a rather inconspicuous black area covering gill opening; black spot at rear corner of mouth preceded by a white area on lower jaw.

Size: reaches 61 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 5-25 m.

Southern Baja and the central Gulf of California to Peru, plus the Revillagigedos, Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
