Dorsal rays XI,15-17, 4th and 5th spines longest; anal rays III,10-11; pectoral rays 17 (rarely 16); rakers on first gill arch 21-26; preopercle rounded without a distinct notch or lobe; tail fin margin straight to slightly concave, without projecting fin rays; scales in longitudinal series above lateral line 90-120.
Adults overall greyish brown; juveniles grey or grey brown with large dusky brown blotches and diffuse dark streaks radiating from eye; median fins with narrow white margins.
Size: grows to 98 cm and 90 Kg.
Inhabits rocky reefs, usually below 30m in summer, but in shallow depths during the remainder of the year.
Depth: 2-50 m.
Southern California to Gulf of California, and the Revillagigedos.
