Body long and slender; head slender, with long pointed lower jaw; both lips with papillae, usually 9-10 on top lip; dorsal fin in 1 part, origin behind nape, above anal fin origin; dorsal IX-XI (usually X), 27-31; anal II, 36-39; pectoral 13-16 (usually 15); lateral line scales 50-53; lateral line broken or complete.
Color variable; head blotched or spotted; usually a dark stripe (composed of a spot at the base of each dorsal fin ray) along midback, 2 thin dark stripes along upper side, with lower one ending in a large blotch on the base of the tail fin; a dark line above the anal fin base; tail fin with 1-2 bars.
Size: 9.6 cm.
Habitat: coastal sandy areas.
Depth: 1-20 m.
Central Mexico to Costa Rica.
