Body long and slender; head slender, with long pointed lower jaw; both lips with flaps, usually 7-11 on top lip; dorsal fin in 1 part, origin behind nape, above anal fin origin; dorsal VII-XI (usually IX), 27-31; anal II, 33-38; pectoral 13-15 (usually 14); lateral line scales 47-52; lateral line unbroken.

Color variable; head either speckled or blotched with a bar under eye, spot at front of bone under eye, and another near front nostril; body generally light tan; with or without 14-18 indistinct bars along top of back; upper side with 3 indistinct brownish stripes; fins pale, except tail has faint brown streaks.

Size: 9.1 cm.

Habitat: coastal sandy areas.

Depth: 1-20 m.

Southern Baja, the western and central eastern Gulf of California, the Tres Marias Islands, the Revillagigedos and Costa Rica.
