NARCINE

ELECTRIC RAYS, NUMBFISHES

Elongate oval disc, with soft, flaccid edges; large kidney-shaped electric organ beside eye; mouth small, tubular, protractile; 2 large, similar sized dorsal fins; thick tail with distinct tail fin; fins angular.

A tropical to temperate genus of about 20 species found in the west Atlantic, Indian Ocean and western Pacific as well as our region, where there are 3 endemic species.
