Overview

"S. bella n. sp. Male. Head black, finely punctured, densely clothed with short whitish hairs, those on the clypeus and labrum silvery ; clypeus, labrum, mandibles except tips which are piceous, orbits of the eyes beneath, and the face on each side of the clypeus, yellowish-white. Antenna as long as the head and thorax, black; flagellum in front rufo-piceous. Thorax entirely black, finely punctured, densely clothed with whitish hairs j tegulse dark ferruginous; scutellum somewhat subbilobate. Wings hyaline, apical margins slightly clouded. Legs clothed beneath with whitish hairs ; coxa), trochanters and femora except tips, blackish ; tibi;« ferruginous, stained with blackish ; tarsi ferruginous. Abdomen minutely punctured, piceous, apical margin of the segments tinged with ferruginous ; first segment above blackish or piceous, obsoletely stained with ferruginous, on each side in the middle a transverse 2.'^

Extracted from Western Bees obtained by the American Museum Expeditions by Cockerell (1921).


IDAHO : 19 , Victor, about 6300 ft. alt., July 11, 1920; 1 ~,Giveout, near Montpelier, about 6700 ft. alt., July 7, 1920. COLORADO: 1 ~ (a variation with basal area of metathorax black), along the South Fork of the Rio Grande at about 37° 36' N., 106° 43' 'V., about 8500 ft. alt. Specimens from Costilla County, Colorado, which Swenk in U)12 placed under bella" were transferred by him to schwarzi in 1915. The type of schwarzi is a male from Veta Pass. The female described by me under schwarzi was lepida. At present, I probably have the 9 of schwarzi mixed with Rocky Mountain bella and do not know how to separate it.

Female - Mandibles simple; fourth joint of antennae longer than third or fifth; ferruginous, tips of mandibles, antennae above, middle of face, vertex, cheeks behind, three broad bands on mesonotum uniting before scutellum, pleura beneath wings extending in a broad band on each side of metathorax, broad middle of latter, coxae, tl'ochantel's, femora at base behind, hinel femora largely, hinel tibiae behind and their metatarsi, base of abdomen and apical margins of segments }-3, more or less black; a spot Oil each siele of segments 2-3, foul' spots on fourth, and two spots. separated or united, on disc of fifth segment, yellow; wings a little more clouded than in the male. Length 9 ml11.
