Identification Tip: Males can be tough to tell from N. imbricata, particularly if they are not in good shape and you can't see the hairs on the middle tarsi. N. luteoloides males have a completely dark patch of integument on the underside of the the scape while N. imbricata have a lightened strip that runs lenghtwise down the underside of the scape...the part that faces the back of the bee...through the black patch that exists there... Thanks to Deana Crumbling for finding this character.

Identification
Extracted from: Swenk, M. H. 1915. The University Studies of the University of Nebraska, Vol. 15.

Two Pennsylvania females, from Fern Rock, May 17, 1903, and Ogontz, May 28 (H. L. Viereck), have antennal joint 3=5 and three-fourths or more as long as 4, and the enclosure sub uniformly roughened. By these characters they are certainly N. luteoloides, but the yellow propodeal marks encroach on the en closure, as described for N. luteola. It thus agrees with the characters of N. luteola bishoppi Ckll. 2, but I would emphasize the antennal structure over the extent of the yellow propodeal marks, and consider bishoppi a subspecies of lutcoloides.

Extracted from: Charles, R. (1895). Notes on bees, with Descriptions of New Species. Transactions of the American Entomological Society Vol. 22, No. 2. pp. 115-128.

♀- Third joint of antennae shorter than fourth, the latter only a little longer than fifth, enclosure of metathorax rather strongly rugose throughout, spot on each side hardly subquadrate and not encroaching on enclosure.

♂- Antennae submoniliform, joints 7-10 each with an evident denticle beneath near apex, third joint shorter than fourth, but not greatly so, insect black, with yellow ornaments.
