Main identification features
  • roof of mouth - side tooth patches = back pointing triangles
NOTARIUS

SEA CATFISHES

Three pairs of barbels (on chin and both jaws); top of head granular, rough or ridged (but without granules or tiny spines at front), covered with thin skin; no fleshy furrow between rear nostrils; bony plate above base of pectoral fin triangular, pointed; gill opening wide, membranes not adhering to breast; teeth on roof of mouth pointed, side patches in form of back-ward pointing triangles; no rakers on rear surfaces of first two gill arches.

A neotropical genus with about 14 species; represented by at least 7 endemics in our region.
