Main identification features
  • head: granular, wide central groove; 4 ridges between eyes
  • head narrow, pointed
  • 2nd dorsal fin base ~ 1st dorsal fin base
  • mouth narrow;top barbel short
Body elongate; head narrow, tapering to a square point, length 1/4-1/3 of standard length; mouth below, narrow (width 31-37% of head length; lips thin to moderate; head covered with large scattered granules, forming 4 crests between eyes; groove on top of head shallow, moderately wide, narrowing to rear; bone at rear of head wide, triangular, contacts wide, semilunar plate at dorsal fin origin ; upper barbels not reaching pectoral spines; gill opening wide, membranes not adhering to chest; sides of roof of mouth with 4 tooth patches, side ones large, long, with waist, pointed at rear; 11-13 rakers on first gill arch; base of adipose (2nd) dorsal fin a little shorter than that of 1st dorsal fin; 19-20 anal rays; 9-10 pectoral rays, pectoral spine strongly serrated; plate above base of pectoral fin triangular, pointed.

Back brown to grey; flanks and belly silver; dorsal fin pale to dark; other fins dusky; barbels grey.

Size: 38 cm.

Habitat: demersal; coastal marine and in high-salinity estuaries.

Depth: 10-20 m?.

The Gulf of Fonseca (El Salvador) to central Costa Rica.
