Body slender; head wide and flat, bluntly pointed when viewed from above, its length 29-32% of standard length; snout extends well before wide mouth; mouth width 43-53% of head length; lips thick and fleshy; teeth on palate viliform, forming a U shaped pattern of 4 closely adjoined patches, the side pair largest and ~triangular; eye small (10-12% of head length); head covered with irregular distinct granules, forming 4 crests between eyes; central groove on top of head shallow and wide; bone at rear of head long, pointed at rear, its width 62% its length, touching a narrow, semilunar plate at origin of dorsal fin; 3 pairs of barbels, upper barbels short, thin, reach to pectoral spines; 4-5 + 8-10 rakers on first gill arch; gill opening wide, membranes not adhering to chest; dorsal and pectoral fin spines thick, strongly serrated; base of adipose (second) dorsal fin as long or a little longer than base of 1st dorsal fin; dorsal fin height ~1/2 head length; 17-20 anal rays; 10-11 pectoral rays.

Back blackish to light brown; belly silver, dotted with grey; blue iridescence on flanks; fins dark; upper surfaces of pectorals and pelvics blackish with blue reflections.

Size: Reaches 79 cm and 4.76 Kg.

Habitat: demersal in fresh and brackish water in river mouths.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Costa Rica to Colombia.
