Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays I, 7; anal rays 17-18; pectoral rays I, 10-11; gill rakers on first arch 4-7 + 7-10; body robust; forehead rough, with thin skin; 3 pairs of barbels; no skin fold between nostrils; plate at front of dorsal fin base large, square or hexagonal and shaped like a forward pointing arrow; teeth at front of top jaw sharp and small, in a broad band; palate teeth conical, in four patches, two inner ones may be fused and joined with large outer patches; inner margin of pectoral spine finely serrated.

Dark brown or bluish on back, silvery white on sides and belly; fins dusky.

Size: reaches 52 cm.

Habitat: coastal waters; mainly marine and not common in shallow turbid waters, prefers deeper water of estuaries, not in rivers.

Depth: 10-30 m?.

Eastern Gulf of California to Peru.
