Dorsal rays XI-XII + I, 25-27; anal rays II, 8-9, 2nd spine < longest ray; pectoral rays 14-16; pored lateral-line scales 48-50; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14-16, total 21-23; mouth large, oblique, the lower jaw slightly projecting; no barbels on chin; eye large, 3.3-3.9 in head length; usually enlarged canine teeth at tip of lower jaw; upper jaw with an outer row of slightly enlarged teeth; margin of preopercle smooth; 2nd anal spine long, nearly equal to length of first soft anal ray; tail margin straight or slightly rounded; soft dorsal and anal fins with well developed scaly sheath.

Color brownish with silvery reflections; sides with narrow longitudinal brown stripes following scale rows, these becoming oblique above lateral line; pelvics and anal blackish; juveniles silvery with distinct midlateral brown stripe and narrower stripes following scale rows.

Size: to about 30 cm.

Inhabits rocky areas and coral reefs.

Depth: 3-30 m ?.

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to Peru.
