Body elongate, slender, somewhat compressed; head wide (~13.8% of SL), and high (height ~17.4% of SL); snout rounded; mouth large, slightly under snout; a sharp spine on opercle that has 1 tip; eye relatively large (2.1-2.7% of SL); upper part of preopercle without a pore; gill rakers 12-16; origin of dorsal fin at level of middle of pectoral fins; pelvic fins inserted below rear part of head; dorsal rays 69-74; anal rays 54-62; pectoral rays 15-17; tail fin rays 11-12; body covered with overlapping, small scales, about 110 in midlateral series; cheek without scales; belly with scales; penis curved, abruptly tapering to tip; 2 pairs of pseudoclaspers associated with penis, outer pair with a long, spine-like support, inner pair much shorter than outer pair.

Inhabits subterranean pools in lava rocks.
