Heavy bodied; small bony process on snout; 5-7 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal rays about 123-143; anal rays 97-114; pectoral rays 21-23; dorsal and anal fins confluent, tail rounded; pelvic fins below eye, outer branch 1.4-2.2 times innner branch; pectorals almost as long as pelvics; head scaleless; body scales elongate or eliptical in shape and at oblique angles to each other; body elongate and compressed, the greatest depth 6.0-6.5 in standard length.

Flank with broken brown stripe along lateral line, with 2-3 rows of spots below; dorsal with dark blotch at front and dark margin; anal with broad black margin; pectoral often dark, especially at tip.

Size: to 22 cm.

Inhabits flat, sandy bottoms, including among mangroves.

Depth: 1-75 m.

Lower Baja California, and the Gulf of California to Ecuador.
